Below is the announcement of a visit to our area next week by Tadashi Sasaki 8p. Sasaki is doing a week-end workshop in San Francisco and paying us a quick visit thereafter to do Tuesday and Wednesday evening sessions at the UnUrban and New Gardena Hotel respectively. Please get in touch with Richard, Joe, Tom Oki or myself for more details. I hasten to add that the late notice is my fault, not Richard’s, Joe’s or Tom’s. Richard in particular stepped in to help when I was unable.

Hello Go Players.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the congenial Tadashi Sasaki, 8-dan professional go player of the Japan Go Association (Nihon Kiin) will give us two separate teaching events next week in Los Angeles as part of his personal West Coast tour. Both events will feature simultaneous 3 on 1 games with Sasaki Sensei to the extent that time permits, followed by an analysis of your games (either the ones played with him, or others that you have an accurate record of). While not involved in a teaching game you are free to watch, or play a game with others which you could have analyzed later. Those who have attended his lectures at the Go Congress or at previous workshops he has given in Washington and Los Angeles will testify to his straightforward answers to questions and his gentle sense of humor. His comments are useful for all levels of go strength.

The first event begins at 7pm, Tuesday, November 9th at the usual meeting place of the Santa Monica Go Club, the Unurban Coffee House, 3301 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405,corner of Urban Ave. (near 33rd St.) and Pico Blvd (310) 315-0056. There is no charge for members of the Santa Monica Go Club, and $10 for others. There may be a nominal surcharge for playing Sensei as opposed to merely participating in all the other activities.

The second event begins at 7pm, Wednesday, November 10th, at the Basement Level of the New Gardena Hotel,1641 West Redondo Beach Blvd # 1, Gardena, CA 90247 (310) 327-5757. The charge for attendance is $20 per person. There may or may not be a nominal surcharge for playing a teaching game with Sensei.

If you want to be included in the number of persons playing a teaching game with Sensei, your chances are better if you come early.

These activities have been organized by Andy Okun, Tom Oki of the New Gardena Hotel, Joe Cepiel of the Santa Monica Go Club and others. For further information about the events, or associated optional activities, such as sight-seeing, dinner, etc. please contact me.

FYI, here's the announcement for the Cotsen Go Tournament coming up inSeptember.
If you've never been to a Go tournament before, here's anexcerpt from the announcement that you might find encouraging:
"Beginners and children are especially welcome, so don’t be afraidto come and play.
Bring your kids, friends, relatives and acquaintances!!!"
The tournament is completely free (except for the $5/day parking). The way it works is, you pay a $20 deposit when you register, and as longas you play through the tournament, you'll get your money back at theend. You don't even have to pay to be an AGA member. It's a lot of fun, a great event that the Los Angeles Go community(and some of our neighboring communities) look forward to every year. You literally see all ages here. It's really not unusual to see an 8-year-old playing a tournament against a 60-year old at this event. I hope you can make it! Please feel free to e-mail me any questions. -Alf

The youngest age ever for a professional go player, Rina Fujisawa One-dan (11 years old, from Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo) who is in the sixth grade of elementary school had her first official game on the 24th, competing in the 20th Annual Ryusei Tournament 第20期竜星戦Preliminary Group B. She debuted with a loss against Michinari Horimoto 2 dan (堀本満成 20 years old), resigning with the black stones after 140 moves. With fighting spirit, she said, “I am a bit disappointed. I would like to win the next game.”

In her aggressive style, the game was even after developing into the middle game. But a costly oversight became the reason she lost. She said with regret, “It turned into a worse position about half-way through”, but she gave Horimoto Two-dan the cold sweats, who said, “She is very strong.”

Her father is Kazunari (藤沢一就八段)Eight-dan, and her grandfather is the late “Meiyo Kisei (名誉棋聖)” (holder of six back to back top go titles in

Japan

) Hideyuki Fujisawa (藤沢秀行)making her a super thoroughbred. She passed the test to be a professional in February, and while living the double life of a grade school student and go professional, she is honing her skills at the go dojo. Talking about her dream she said “I would like to do my best to win a (championship) title”.

REPORT: Yu Go Club New Year Intra Club Tournament!

Yu Go Club's Nicky and Dani Kerr are writing about the Intra Club Tournament that was organized on January 3. Let's take a look!

The morning started off with many cheery hellos; everyone was fresh and ready for a great time! What better way could there be to spend a Sunday afternoon than surrounded by your Go buddies.

We went right to work splitting the competitors into two bite sized groups. The teens and the adults fought it out amongst themselves for the top spots in their category. Many dreams died that day and many calories were ingested. Thanks for the snacks!

Only three teens and three adults were allowed to advance to the finals. Their bravery through battle had won them the sought after intra-club “bragging rights”. As a bonus they were allotted each one prize and using their finely tuned mental prowess they selected their spoils. All the teens selected fans and the adults, finely crafted Japanese style boxes.

It’s a good thing everyone was on the same wavelength, because the final round was (by popular demand) a grand three on three battle fought by the finalists on…a single board.

The most challenging aspect of a multi player Go game is certainly keeping track of whose turn it is to deal the next blow. Seriously.

Jingbo and Joe Masiero were kind enough to record the game and were able still to take part in the daunting task of intimidating the opposing adolescence. The adults had those babies hiding behind their frilly bunny print fans.

It made them all the cuter. So cute in fact that it caused the adults to let down their guard and in the end, it cost them the game. Final results: Ezana, Dani and Nicky managed a win against Joe, Jingbo and Terry.

A big round of applause for our organizer Jonathan Luc! And another for the wonderful duo at Reiyukai who provided the snacks and an awesome place to meet our friends and play Go!

The two weeks after the Thanksgivings were very slow..... Well, it is Holiday season and what else can we say... We hope everyone is having a good time with their family and friends celebrating the holiday!

However, we had a good turn out on December 16. Yu Go Club's old friend, Gary, came back.

Tadashi Sasaki 8p (professional 8dan Go player) of the Nihon Ki-in (Japan Go Assoc.) will return to Los Angeles for a two-dayworkshop November 7 and 8, with day one at the New Gardena Hotel in Gardena and day two at the Southern California Chinese Broadcasting building in Alhambra. Sasaki Sensei is funny, good-natured and able to instruct all different skill levels. Every participant will get to play him in a simul game (he will play three or four of us at one time).

Day One, Saturday Nov. 7:

Start time 10 a.m. Pizza/salad lunch provided. Finish at 5 p.m. Location, New Gardena Hotel, 1641 Redondo Beach Blvd., Gardena. Parking is free in hotel basement.

Takes Big Go Title at Youngest Age in History Yuta Iyama, 20 years old

When talking about [Japanese] Professional Go player Iyama, the 67 year old 9-dan teacher Kunio Ishii must also be mentioned. When Iyama was six, 9-dan Ishii was working as a commentator on the Go television program Iyama appeared on as an outstanding juvenile player. This chance meeting became a turning point.

9-dan Ishii who said, “His sensibility and spark in Go is exceptional and I thought he was born to play Go!”, coaches by playing him on the internet most every week. He played over a thousand games with him until Iyama was nine years old and ready to become an Insei (candidate for a professional go player.) Iyama himself looks back saying, “If I had not encountered my teacher Mr. Ishii, the person I am now would not exist and I would not know if I would have become a professional Go player”.

Iyama debuted as a professional Go player (1-dan) at 12 years of age. It is the second youngest age in the history of the Nihon Ki-in, or the Japan Go Association. At 16, he won the Agon-Kiriyama Cup, and became the youngest player ever to win the title.

In the year 2007, he qualified for the leagues through the Kisei and Meijin championships and this year he has qualified for the Honinbo Championship League. In the Meijin championships he overwhelmed five title’s holder Meijin Chang Hsu on his second attempt.

Iyama is gentle and mild-mannered. Grandmother Sekiko of age 73 who lives with him says, “He was always a quiet child. He is enduring and does not cry often. But it is different when it comes to go. He cried often when he lost a game.”

Japanese Go has fallen behind China and South Korea and has long struggled in the international Go championships. Iyama is, of course, aware of this. From here on out he aims to “study hard and become a world-class go player.”

Yu Go Club dazzled at the Cotsen Go Tournament!

Yu Go Club participated at the Cotsent Go Tournament! Here is the report from our youth members!

Things got off to a slow start but it was definitely worth the wait! With about 165 participants - some from as far away as Tacoma in Washington, Tucson in Arizona and Canada- there was never a dull moment.

Our club was not the largest but we were definitely the best dressed! Wearing our club logo on wonderfully designed light blue shirts we attracted all! Some even wore theirs backwards so their long hair would not obscure the wonderful logo. Many mighty warriors fought long and grueling battles on the Go boards and at least half felt the horrible sting of defeat. Yu Go Club member, Ezana -who had only been playing for two months- and Luis from our club doled out the most merciless plays; leaving most every
opponent shattered on the floor. Thank goodness for the Masseuses!

The “Yu Go Club” consists of many skilled players. The following ones participated in this tourney: Alf Mikula and Joe Walters- founding members of our club- Luis Armendariz - who went undefeated throughout the whole ordeal- Jingbo Lou, Don Cram, Jack Cai, Johnathan Luc, Ezana Berhane, Nicky and Dani Kerr -that inseparable duo.

The award ceremony was a blast! Tons of whistling and cheering and even a little jeering as the winners took that long walk to the stage. Certainly their blood pressure was out the roof but thankfully we did not need any stretchers.

The organizers deserve some credit for putting together such an AWESOME tournament, so here it is. It was a wonderful tournament with very generous people.

To end on a happy note; The Yu Go Club got a lot of positive attention and we will surely gain many followers as the year progresses.
